Problem:  

Put the mouse cursor over an Document Explorer window in Visual Studio 2008 (SP1)  and turn the mouse wheel a few times. Document Explorer crashes, if the mouse wheel is set to "One screen at a time"

My solution:  
  1. Download and install free KatMouse utility (http://ehiti.de/katmouse)
  2. Set KatMouse to "Scroll a page at a time"
  3. Click Applications tab
  4. Add dexplore.exe from Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Help 9 folder
  5. Double-click dexplore.exe and check on Custom scroll setting
  6. Click OK button
